"Because of what reading and learning has done for me, I believe that education is the door to freedom, that it changes everything."
-Oprah Winfrey
Free the Children
It all started in 1999 when Oprah had Craig Kielburger on her television show. He and Marc Kielburger were the founders and creators of the Free the Children organization. After hearing their story, Oprah decided she wanted to help out the cause.
Oprah’s Angel Network has collaborated with Free the Children to build and outfit 59 schools in 12 different countries. Together, in 2007, they launched “O Ambassadors,” a school-based program for students in the United States and Canada. (Free the Children, 2010). Over 1.1 million dollars has already been raised to support the development initatives around the world. They have helped change the futures of nearly 2000 children all over the globe.
